Tucked away in the southeastern Philippines, Siargao is a tropical paradise for surfers, adventurers, and free-spirited travelers. It’s known as the “surfing capital of the Philippines” and one of my favorite travel destinations ever. With its world-class waves, stunning lagoons, laid-back vibe, and welcoming locals, this island’s magic will draw you in, leaving you daydreaming about it long after you’ve gone. Here is everything you need to know to make the most of your time in Siargao.
Important Things to Know
Best Time to Visit:
The best time to visit Siargao is during the dry season, from March to October. For surfers, the peak season runs from August to November, but the waves can be surfed year-round.
Getting to Siargao:
Flights to Sayak Airport (Siargao Airport) are available from Cebu and Manila, making these cities the most common starting points. From the airport, it’s about a 45-minute ride to General Luna, the island’s main hub.
Where to Stay:
Most tourists stay near General Luna or Cloud 9. This is where you will find the most accommodation, restaurants, surf schools, etc. We stayed at The Henry Resort at Kermit Siargao and loved the infinity pool, wood fired pizza, luxurious rooms, and awesome surf instructors.
Transportation:
Getting around Siargao is part of the adventure! Motorbikes are the most popular and best way to explore and rentals are cheap, costing around $6-8. There are also local tricycle taxis that can take you around the island if you don’t feel comfortable motorbiking. Personally, motorbiking is my favorite way to explore the island—I love the wind in my hair, the smell of ocean air, the roads lined with palm trees, and every moment in between.
Siargao is Still Remote:
My visits to Siargao in 2019 and 2024 showed me how the island has retained much of its rustic charm despite increased popularity. However, the devastating 2021 typhoon slowed development, so visitors should prepare for occasional power outages, slower Wi-Fi, and simpler accommodations. During our visit, a main power line from the mainland broke, leaving the island without electricity for weeks. Thankfully, many hotels and restaurants have generators, but things like this happen pretty often which adds a touch of adventure to the experience.
Things to Do in Siargao, Philippines
1. Go Surfing (or Learn to Surf):
Surfing is the number one activity in Siargao. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a first-timer, there’s a surf spot for every skill level. Siargao was where we first learned to surf, and the experience was incredible. Surf schools and instructors are easy to find, and their excellent English makes learning smooth and fun. I went through Kermit Siargao for surf lessons and had an amazing experience.
2. Island Hopping Tour:
The surrounding islands near Siargao are stunning and shouldn’t be missed. A popular island-hopping tour costs around $20-25 per person, includes lunch, and takes you to these must-see spots:
- Naked Island: A pristine sandbar surrounded by turquoise waters.
- Daku Island: Known for its white-sand beaches and palm-tree-studded landscape, it’s a perfect spot for a seafood lunch.
- Guyam Island: A tiny, picturesque island with lush greenery, ideal for snorkeling and relaxing.
3. Magpupungko Rock Pools:
These natural tidal pools are a must-see during low tide. Swim in crystal-clear waters, explore unique rock formations, and enjoy the stunning views of the surrounding coastline.
4. Sugba Lagoon Tour:
Sugba Lagoon is a serene, emerald-green paradise nestled in the mangroves. It’s perfect for kayaking, paddle boarding, or jumping off the famous wooden diving board. Tours to Sugba Lagoon often include stops at nearby attractions like Kawhagan Island, making it a great all-day adventure.
